One more connection problem-Security Issue

My company gave me their old Windows 2000 server. I installed my
database on it and the ODBC connection works perfectly on the server.
When I go to my client machine I go the the ODBC Connections in it and
it fails. It refuses connections and will not reply to pings. It is not
a network issue, as I can telnet to the server just fine. It's strictly
a security issue. I just have no clue where to look. Any suggestions
would be appreciated. ThanksCurt (myemail@.nowehere.com) writes:

Which version of SQL Server?

If you are using SQL 2005, you need to enable remote connections, as by
default Express and Developer Editon only accepts local connections. You
can use the Surface Area Configuration tool for this.

Also, if you are using SQL Express, make sure that SQL Broswer is running,
so that the named instance can be found.

If you are using SQL 2000, I would look in the Server Network Utility
to see which protcols that are installed.

One last xp_cmdshell Q (sorry)

I run the below on the box that has psExec installed as sa (dbo) in QA.
The MSSQLSERVER service is set to Local Account.
Domain\Administrator will run c:\psexec \\10.2.27.230 -I cmdmgr_Resume.bat
from a CmdExec job sucessfully. I run same from command prompt successfully.
Do I have to set MSSQLSERVER agent to start as admin.?
Or can I explicitly say exec master.Domain\Administrator.cp_cmdshell or
similar?
Even our DBA is stumped!!
EXEC xp_cmdshell 'c:\psexec \\10.2.27.230 -I cmdmgr_Resume.bat' ;

It looks like psExec doesn't have permission but it is SQL QA that is the
sourcer of the problem.Local Account? or Local System? The SQL Server service must execute with
the credentials needed to execute commands on the other computer. It cannot
execute as Local System. It must execute as a domain user account.
WARNING!!! It is extremely dangerous to use xp_cmdshell in this way. It is
even more dangerous to run as a domain admin. If you're a consultant, be
sure you have a battalion of lawyers in your pocket and review your
professional insurance contract, because it would be a simple thing for a
smart lawyer to prove gross negligence on your part.

don't have to worry about the xp_cmdshell security hole. Another solution
is to use replication, but if you can't, then you can queue up the
information in a table and create a dequeue process to move it. Both of
these solutions is more robust, because you can still collect information if
the other system is down.

Hi marcmc,
(S)he should check out what BOL says about services accounts.
If you really want to do it like this, than the least unsafe way is to:
a) Have your network administrator set up a domain account for use by
the SQL Server service. Make sure to change the password policy to not
automatically age the password.
b) Give this account all privileges required for SQL Server operation,
plus all privileges required to run your batch file. Don't give any
other privileges to this account. If your version of windows allows it,
disable the posibility to log on using this account as a normal user
(i.e. make it an account that can only be used by services)
c) Change the startup parameters for your SQL Server instance to log in
using this account instead of logging in as Local System.
d) Keep your fingers crossed :-)
But I agree with Brian that there are other ways to do this, and that
they are probably better!
Best, Hugo

on nt4

I know this sounds oldish but the fact is I have Sql Server 2000 installed
on an NT4 machine. Everything works correctly exept Sql Server stops by
itself after a certain amount of time, irrigularly. There is nothing in the
log of the server of the machine.
Is there another tool that I could use to find out why this appends.
thanks

Could you please monitor your resource utlization (Memory in particular)
using performance monitor. Check the usage of virtual memory as well.
Look into the Event viewer as well as SQL server error logs for any messages

I will also install Sp3.

Oleddb dropdown list is empty in Excel

Hello,

I have an issue with connecting Excel to an analysis Services 2005 database. The computer is running Windows XP Sp2 and Office XP. I installed the oledb driver 9.0 but when I tried to connect with the pivot table and I want to create the connection, the dropdown list of the data provider is empty. I tried on another computer with Excel XP and the system is working fine.
Is there somebody that could help?

Thank you

It sounds like it might be a connection/networking issue? On the computer, try making an ODBC Data Source. You can do this by choosing Start->Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Data Sources (ODBC).

From here, on the User DSN tab, press the Add... button. On the list of providers, you should see "SQL Native Client" or "SQL Server". Choose one of these. On the next dialog, you should see 3 fields, Name, Description, and Server. Use the drop down list of "Server" to see if you can find the server that you're looking for. If you can, then it's something else. If you can't, then talk to your system administrator about troubleshooting why that server can't be seen from your computer. Either way, you can cancel and close these dialogs without making any changes to your computer. This should only test the visibility of the server to your computer.

Hope this helps. Please follow up if this doesn't help you.

Thanks for the help but it doesn't work. If I try to create an ODBC connection the system is working fine. It seems to me that the problem is related only to the OleDb component for Analysis Services. I am going to try to uninstall and install back office to see it this will fix something.

Thanks again!

OLEDB Error when using Visual FoxPro Driver

Hi all,

I created a package that extracts records from a .DBF file into an SQL Server database. I installed a Visual FoxPro plugin (vfpoledb). When I run the package from my PC, it runs smoothly. But, when I try to run the same package in another PC, it displays a DTS_E_OLEDBERROR "Class not registered" error. Anyone has an idea about what this means? thanks in advance.
Is the OLE DB driver correctly installed in the other PC? If the package runs fine in one PC, then I doubt is a SSIS issue.|||Yes, the OLEDB is installed properly in the other PC. The driver is also installed in the Database Server. Still the problem occurs. I also tried placing and running the SSIS package in the database server but the same problem is encountered. I'm running out of ideas as to what might have caused the problem. What might be the cause(s) of the problem?

Thanks.

Could you try using this provider with some other client?

Thanks,

Bob

OLE DB on Desktop

hello everybody,

I've installed SQL Compact Edition (with Visual Studio 2005) and i try to compile Northwindoledb for the DeskTop. The goal of this operation is to migrate a Pocket PC application (C++/OLE DB/SQL Mobile) to the desktop. If i can run properly Northwindoledb project i could start to migrate ...

I've the following error :

hr = pICmdText->Execute(NULL, IID_NULL, NULL, NULL, NULL);

GUID_NULL undefined

What can i do ?

Thanks in advance !I've found the following definition :

#define DEFINE_GUIDSTRUCT(g, n) struct __declspec(uuid(g)) n
#define DEFINE_GUIDNAMED(n) n

DEFINE_GUIDSTRUCT("00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000", GUID_NULL);
#define GUID_NULL DEFINE_GUIDNAMED(GUID_NULL)
I will see if it works ...

OLE DB drivers and Vista 64 bit

I am trying to load a Fox Pro file which I used to be able to load before I installed 64 bit Vista. I'm using ver 9 of the fox pro driver. I don't know if it's a driver problem or something else I am doing wrong.

Here's the error msg:

SSIS Error Code DTS_E_OLEDBERROR. An OLE DB error has occurred. Error code: 0x80040154.

An OLE DB record is available. Source: "Microsoft OLE DB Service Components" Hresult: 0x80040154 Description: "Class not registered".

Error: 0xC020801C at Load Country, OLE DB Source [1]: SSIS Error Code DTS_E_CANNOTACQUIRECONNECTIONFROMCONNECTIONMANAGER. The AcquireConnection method call to the connection manager "C:\Users\john.church.LLC\Desktop\MaxMin\AccountingSystem Database\AccountingSystem Database\AccountingSystem.DBC" failed with error code 0xC0202009. There may be error messages posted before this with more information on why the AcquireConnection method call failed.

But then it also says something about registering a class. I'm a .net moron so I'm not sure what that means.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Hi John,The VFP OLE DB data provider isn't 64-bit compatible.|||"Does Microsoft have a 64 bit driver?" he asked, laughing and shaking his head.|||Not for Visual FoxPro, and there are no plans to create one.|||Kinda what I figured. Now my only decision is whether to go back to Vista 32 or XP.........has MS announced when they're going to cancel Vista yet?
